Most of the stuff I would like to write about I think about them in the shower. Yes, the shower!
Corruption in Kenya is a topic I and many a Kenyan can go on and on and on about. I just thought I’d throw in a word or two of what I feel about the issue.
To me, corruption is not of the leaders or heads of departments or workers in government only, it is a thing that all of us suffer from.
We usually say “Oh that politician is so corrupt…” bla bla bla, then when we go to City Council we tell the person serving us, “Aki I can’t wait a whole three months for this to go through, si you take this 5k and sort me out eh?” *wink-wink*.
To add insult to injury, the city council guy just takes it and uses it to bribe more guys huko ndani so that it can pass.
I think its a high time we as Kenyans say no to corruption, and mean it! We say it but we never mean it. We always want the easy way out, the lighter load. But we need to make this a country that we are proud of. We need to shun bribery and shame those who condone it. It is us who can make this a better place for ourselves.
It is said that impunity is “Exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action”. It is us who propagate impunity, and worse, we do it on a daily basis! Yea, we don’t realise it, but…
When you throw a banana peel on the streets instead of into a rubbish bin, that’s impunity.
When you run a red light, impunity.
When you sit hapo kwa conductor and you’re four instead of three, impunity.
I could go on, but you get my point. I’m also not saying I don’t do some of these things, but I endeavour daily to eliminate impunity from my life. It is a rot that needs to be dealt with. Some may say that some of these things are nothing and they wouldn’t hurt, but if you look at the bigger picture, there is more to them than meets the eye.
Lets make Kenya a place we truly want to live in. Lets eliminate the number of times we complain daily. Remember what I always say,
